Bespoke, From first idea to the finished piece

Bespoke, From first idea to the finished piece

Every bespoke piece begins with a conversation with Matthew. Together you’ll explore gemstones, ideas, proportion and design before Matthew develops and handcrafts your piece in our Brisbane studio.

Whether it’s an engagement ring, a special commission or a reworking of something you already own, the process is personal, considered and centred around creating something individual to you.

Design Consultation

Meet with Matthew to discuss your ideas, explore natural gemstones and talk through the possibilities for your piece. Matthew will guide you through design, materials and budget. Complimentary.

GEMSTONE sourcing & DESIGN

Following your consultation, Matthew will source any gemstones required and develop the design for your piece. This may include hand sketches and different design options as the idea develops.

A detailed estimate will then be provided.

This intricate process may involve multiple design iterations.

FINALISE & COMMISSION

Once the gemstones and design are finalised and you’re happy to proceed, a 50% deposit confirms your commission, and Matthew begins making your piece.

Completion & Collection

Once complete, your piece is ready to collect from our studio or can be securely delivered to you.

Final payment is due on completion

FAQ

Will my design consultation be with Matthew?

Yes. Every bespoke consultation is personally with Matthew. He’ll guide you through natural gemstones, design possibilities, proportions, materials and the craftsmanship involved in creating your piece

How long will it take for Matthew to craft my piece?

As every piece is individually handcrafted, we generally allow 6–8 weeks from confirmation of your commission. If you have a particular date in mind, please let us know during your consultation and we’ll advise what may be possible.

Does my piece come with a Valuation

Pieces valued at $5,000 or more include an independent valuation. Valuations for pieces below this amount can also be arranged at an additional cost.

Can I supply my own gemstones?

Matthew works with natural gemstones he has personally sourced, as well as selected heirloom gemstones where suitable. If you have an existing natural gemstone, you would like considered, please bring it to your consultation for Matthew to assess.

Do you remodel Jewellery?

Yes. Matthew undertakes selected jewellery remodelling commissions, particularly where significant or heirloom gemstones can be reimagined into a new piece. Book a consultation to discuss what may be possible.

Do you supply and work with man-made / synthetic stones?

Our work is centred exclusively around natural gemstones and natural diamonds.

I don't live in Brisbane; can I still commission a piece?

Absolutely. We work with clients throughout Australia and interstate commissions can be managed remotely, with consultations by phone or video and secure delivery of your completed piece.

Do you handcraft your pieces?

Yes. Every bespoke piece is personally designed and handcrafted by Matthew in our Brisbane studio using traditional jewellery-making techniques. From the initial design through to the finished piece, Matthew remains involved in every stage of its creation.

Who have you created for?

Over the years, Matthew has created pieces for clients from all walks of life, including some very familiar names. Discretion has always been part of the MJS experience, so unless a client chooses to share their piece or story, their privacy remains exactly that — private.
