MJS JEWELLERY

James Street, Brisbane

Our Brand

Our Brand

Matthew Staff’s story as a jeweller began in 1998, working from his parents’ garage and building his business piece by piece around his craft and a love of natural gemstones.

In 2009, Matthew and Simone established MJS Jewellery on James Street with a shared belief that fine jewellery should be personal — thoughtfully designed, beautifully made and created with meaning for the person who will wear it.

That philosophy still sits at the heart of MJS today.

For more than 17 years on James Street, MJS Jewellery has remained deliberately personal. Clients meet directly with Matthew, the jeweller and designer who will create their piece, and are part of the process from the first conversation through to the finished piece.

While Matthew is the creative force at the bench, Simone works alongside him behind the scenes, shaping the client experience, visual identity and relationships that have become an important part of MJS Jewellery.

Together, they have built a jewellery house known for one-of-a-kind commissions, exceptional natural gemstones and a distinctly personal approach to fine jewellery. Many clients have been with MJS for years, returning to mark new chapters, reimagine treasured heirlooms or create pieces to pass on to the next generation.

From Matthew’s parents’ garage in 1998 to James Street and what comes next, MJS Jewellery continues to evolve while remaining true to what has always defined it: authentic craftsmanship, personal connection and jewellery made with purpose.

Meet

Matthew Staff

Gemmologist ( FGAA), Master Goldsmith, Designer

At the heart of MJS Jewellery is Matthew Staff — master jeweller, gemmologist and designer with more than 30 years of experience.

Matthew’s fascination with natural gemstones has taken him from the gem fields of Tanzania to the cutting houses of Idar-Oberstein in Germany. He selects each gemstone for its individual character, beauty and potential to become something extraordinary.

His work combines traditional goldsmithing techniques with a strong, instinctive approach to design. Every bespoke piece is designed and handcrafted by Matthew in his Brisbane studio — from the first sketch through to the final setting and finish.

Matthew’s designs have also earned national recognition. His ring Sprung was a finalist in the 2012 Jewellery Association of Australia Awards, while Flame won a Diamond Guild Australia Award in 2018.

Away from the bench, Matthew is most at home outdoors — hiking, mountain biking and exploring remote landscapes. Nature, movement and organic form regularly find their way into his work.

“I want people to see that we can still make beautiful things by hand — and that they can last a lifetime.” — Matthew Staff

For Matthew, jewellery isn’t simply something to wear. It’s something made for one person, with a story and meaning that can continue long after it leaves his bench.
